Do I Really Need a Logo Design for My Small Business?

As a brand designer, this is a question that comes up fairly frequently during preliminary consult calls with potential clients. We'll be talking through their needs or what a package could look like, then they'll hit me with the ol' "But do I reeeeeeeally need a logo design?"

I should probably try to upsell them to spend more money. But unfortunately, my business values include being transparent and actually trying to help clients to the best of my abilities. So, sometimes my answer is β€œNo, you don't really always need a logo.” Because after more than 15 years as a professional brand designer, I don't think a logo automatically has to be the most important piece of your identity (don't tell other designers I utter this blasphemy!).

When A Logo Can Wait

If you're just starting out, you may not have everything completely figured out quite yet. You might still be developing your services, packages, how you'll talk about them, who your ideal clients are, and how you want to present your business. Let's be honest, all of us are still figuring it out! But when you're in the weeds at the beginning and don't yet have a solid grasp of those basics, a logo design may not be the best use of your limited resources.

Rather than fixating on a logo, start simple. Focus on your typography by choosing one or two fonts that feel like you and use them consistently with different sizes to create hierarchy. For a color palette, pick one or two colors and maybe mix in some different light/dark shades for variety. Create a vibe for your imagery by finding a handful of good-quality photos to use over and over, whether they're custom or stock images.

Consistent typography, a simple color palette + some great photos can work wonders and might be just enough for you right now.

When A Logo Right Away Matters More

The type of business you have also makes a huge difference when I answer this. If you've got a brick-and-mortar location or physical storefront, a logo becomes much more important as it can literally be the thing that grabs someone's attention when they're walking by.

One of my clients is a dentist with signage outside his office featuring the logo we created. He doesn't get a ton of walk-in traffic since most people find him online. But not too long after his sign went up, a woman who had seen it on her daily walk noticed the cool logo, made an appointment, and became a new client! That’s a power of a good logo design!

When A Logo Becomes Truly Valuable

Once you have a good grasp on your business’s basics β€” that's when investing in a logo design can have a really big impact.

A logo takes the core elements of your business and distills them down into a recognizable visual mark. It might represent what you do, communicate more figuratively about your approach, or even be a literal interpretation of your name (Six Leaf obviously is built around a leaf). While your fonts and colors should absolutely be chosen intentionally to represent your business, they usually aren't custom to you. Your logo is!

Regardless of the concept, a good logo gives you a custom visual element you can use repeatedly throughout your brand. I typically create a whole logo system with different variations + layouts, and those can all be broken into pieces to be used throughout your marketing materials and website in all sorts of ways.

As people see it again and again, they start to associate the mark with you and your business. That repetition helps your brand become more recognizable and trustworthy. And that's really what you want: to stay top of mind with your target audience and build a relationship.

So....Do You Really Need A Logo?

No, I don't necessarily think that you absolutely, 100%, no exceptions need a logo design in all cases. Especially if you're a service-based business just starting out, bootstrapping, DIYing, or being cautious in how you spend your resources. But once you have a solid foundation and know your business + ideal clients inside and out, a custom logo can be an incredibly helpful and invaluable part of your brand arsenal.

So, the answer to this question isn't just "you don't need a logo." It's just "you don't need one yet."
